UNDERSTANDING AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Many parents and caregivers may come across the terms autism, autistic disorder, or Asperger’s syndrome. All these terms are diagnoses that fall under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs). ASDs are a group of developmental disorders that include a wide range of symptoms related to social skills, communication skills, and behaviors that a child with ASD presents. Some children who are diagnosed with ASD may have severe symptoms while other may demonstrate mild concerns. It is crucial for the parents to share the child’s information with the (potential) caregiver to create an understanding of the unique needs of their child.
