COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP NEEDED

Within a family, the mother and father are seen as key persons in raising the child with ASD. When the parents request support in care from another person, this person becomes part of the care team and plays a role in raising the child with ASD as well. While the parents have expertise about their child’s conditions, the caregiver may have a different experience with other children. In general, children can adapt to different caring styles; however, this is not always the case in a child with ASD. The symptoms of ASD create a need for consistency with activities and surroundings. Consequently, a child with ASD tends to have specific routines and difficulty in adaptation. Reactive behaviors in a child with ASD can occur with unpredictable situations and changes in daily routines, and this can create stress and anxiety in the child. Therefore, the need for consistency in how care is delivered by the parents and caregiver is important, and collaborative partnership plays an important role in creating smooth and effective care.

This Parent-Caregiver Partnership Toolkit was developed in accordance with the requirements of the 2017-2018 Capstone Experience course of the Advanced Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (AMOT) program, A. T. Still University, Mesa, AZ
